Today, we're featuring A.J. Magoon in our Meet the Cast of HENRY V series. A.J. plays King Charles and Canterbury.
What is your "deal?" I grew up in Menomonee Falls and have called the Milwaukee theatre scene home for most of my life - I was a First Stage kid and worked at various theatres in the area growing up. I graduated in 2018 from Marquette University with a BA in Theatre Arts and a minor in Public Relations, and I'm still acting in the area. I'm also the Executive Director of Summit Players Theatre, Wisconsin's only free, traveling Shakespeare in the State Parks organization, and the Artistic Administrator of Theatre Nervosa. I love traveling, the outdoors, good food and good music. Shameless brag? I was Valedictorian in college. What is your favorite food? There are so many foods in the world that I love eating, but honestly? I'll never turn down french fries. Never. What has been your favorite role to date? I had a blast playing Jason and Tyrone in VFR's Hand to God last spring. I had just come off of self-producing a one-man show with a lot of dry wit and wordplay, and Hand to God was such a fun 180 from that. Not only did I get to hone my puppeteering skills, but I got to bring this crass, violent, awful puppet to life and play against myself in scenes. How often do you get to play the good guy and the bad guy at the same time? It's especially enjoyable when the bad guy (the puppet) has so much fun being bad. It was a huge challenge and an absolute joy. What are you most excited about during HENRY? History is a genre of Shakespeare I haven't touched very much, so I'm excited to dive deeper into this show and see what unique challenges and adventures it's got in store. I'm also thrilled to get to work with a lot of new faces - I didn't know much of the cast going into this show, so I get to work with (and play off of) new actors, which is a huge joy for me. What's everyone bringing to the table? I love the discoveries in the process. Photograph by Robert Colletta Photography.
